If you’ve never seen a counsellor before it may be a bit daunting or awkward attending your first session. That is very normal. So, here is a bit about what to expect.
If you feel anxious or depressed but feel apprehensive about starting a counselling process that is understandable. Stepping into something new and unfamiliar will raise fears and concerns. These thoughts and emotions are normal so don’t let them deter you from sitting down and speaking with a counsellor.
Our job is to make you feel comfortable from the get go. We understand that sharing your story with a stranger can be overwhelming but rest assured that we are professional and respectful and create a safe space to share.
Your privacy and confidentiality is important to us and if you are not sure about how this works then just ask your counsellor. At The Melbourne Counselling Centre we take you through what confidentiality looks like before your first session.
It’s helpful to be aware that all counsellors are different and there are many different therapeutic approaches and modalities that are used to help clients. First up you want to feel safe and comfortable with your counsellor, so it’s ok to ask them questions about how they work too and what you can expect. The relationship between you and your therapist is an important component of your process and success so feeling seen and heard is essential.
In terms of what to expect from counselling, the first session is an opportunity for the counsellor and the client to get to know each other. Sometimes we will dive right into the core issue and other times go more gently. This is determined by where you, the client is at. One thing to note is that you do not have to tell your whole story as this can be upsetting. It’s always your choice to disclose what you wish to discuss, our Counsellors work with you. By the end of the first session you can expect to feel understood, and a sense of where the counselling process is going.
The counselling process is fluid yet there is a keen focus on keeping your goals in mind and facilitating your growth to relieve and resolve the struggles you are experiencing.
Outside of Melbourne Counselling Centre, our therapists are involved in community-based activities facilitating growth, personal development and self-agency through community workshops. We are always working to provide the most up to date, evidence-based techniques and interventions to bring to our clients so they can benefit from effective strategies that help them move forward positively in their lives.

At the Melbourne Counselling Centre, we love working with Adolescents, Individuals, Couples and Families. It allows us to deal with multiple levels of family members, often providing us with the ability to fast track treatments by simply being able to understand the family unit more efficiently.
