What Things Can I Do To Help With My Anger
What Things Can I Do To Help With My Anger
One of the most common things I get asked by clients is ‘what things can I do to help with my anger’. Many people are so distressed by the angry parts of their personalities that they are highly motivated and determined to clear the anger. Being motivated towards change is perhaps the most important part of the what you can do to help with your anger. Because it’s the intention to change that sets the ball rolling towards removing the blocks that hold you back. There are many strategies to help with anger from learning how to read the signs of anger in your body through to seeking the support of an experienced counsellor who can assist you to resolve your anger.
Learning what your body does when it goes into anger mode is a good place to start helping with your anger. Notice how your heart beats faster and you breathe more quickly as your body prepares itself for action. This is called the stress response or fight/flight/freeze and is the bodies automatic response to threat. If you notice these signs, remove yourself immediately from the situation and calm down with some slow breathing. If you have a history of anger, then staying in a situation that has triggered your stress response will only escalate these anger feelings. This is what leads to destructive behaviours and anger that is out of control.

Slow breathing is another useful tool for helping with anger. The idea is to slow down the breath by breathing out for longer than you breathe in, and to relax as you breathe out. This slows down the stress response that has in this hyperactive mode. Practising this technique regularly will greatly assist to calm down when you get angry helping you to think more clearly and calmly.
Exercise and physical activity can be another good strategy to help with anger. Anything that brings down your stress levels and encourages the activation of feel good hormones in the body will be useful. The more regularly your exercise routine the more helpful it is to feeling good and being better able to cope with distressing and frustrating events.
Over the long term however, just coping with anger will only get you so far so it’s essential to get help with your anger to resolve it completely.
