Counselling
Focused, practical, usually shorter. Best for a defined difficulty: a decision, a conflict, a period of stress or grief.

"Therapy" is the umbrella word. Counselling usually means shorter, focused work on a present difficulty; psychotherapy means longer work on underlying patterns. Most real practice blends the two.
In short
“Therapy” is the umbrella term. Counselling usually means shorter, focused work on a present difficulty; psychotherapy means longer work on underlying patterns, beliefs and history. Neither title is legally protected in Australia, so a practitioner’s qualifications and professional registration matter more than the word used.
Counselling tends to be time-limited and problem-focused: an issue is named, skills are built, and the work concludes. Psychotherapy works at the level of pattern, belief and relational history, and typically runs longer. "Therapy" is used loosely to describe both, and in Australia neither word is legally protected — which is why the practitioner’s training and registration matter far more than the label on the door.
At Melbourne Counselling Centre the work is deliberately mixed. Most clients begin with counselling on a specific difficulty; where the same pattern keeps producing the difficulty, the work moves into psychotherapy. Where trauma is driving it, structured trauma resolution is used instead of open-ended talking.

Longer and deeper. Works on patterns, beliefs and history that keep reproducing the same outcomes.
Forward-focused performance and goal work. Not mental health treatment, and not a substitute for it.
Psychology and psychiatry are separate regulated professions with assessment and prescribing scopes counsellors do not have.
No — they suit different problems. The wrong one is choosing long-term depth work for a practical decision, or six sessions for thirty years of pattern.
Counselling is self-regulated. Practitioners register with bodies such as the ACA or PACFA; always check membership and qualifications.
Both, chosen to fit the problem. It is discussed openly rather than decided for you.
