Self Esteem & Confidence

Low self-worth is learned, which means it can be unlearned. We work on the voice, the evidence it ignores, and the behaviours that keep proving it right.

Self Esteem & Confidence session at Melbourne Counselling Centre

Self-esteem tracks performance; self-worth is the baseline sense that you count regardless of output. People with low self-worth are often high performers, which is why the problem stays invisible — the achievement is real and the relief never arrives.

The work identifies the voice, traces where it was learned, and builds a fairer and more accurate one. Alongside that we change the behaviours that keep confirming it: over-apologising, over-functioning, saying yes automatically, and turning down what you actually want.

You might recognise

  • Achieving a lot and feeling like a fraud
  • Apologising for existing in ordinary conversations
  • Turning down opportunities before anyone can refuse you
  • Accepting treatment you would not accept for a friend
  • A voice in your head no friend would ever use

What we work on together

Name the voice

Whose it is, when it started, and what it was originally protecting you from.

Answer it accurately

Not affirmations — a fairer, evidence-based account you actually believe.

Change the proof

Boundaries, asking, and taking up space, so behaviour stops confirming the old belief.

How the work unfolds

Schema-informedCBTSelf-compassionBoundary work
  1. 01

    Map the voice

What it says, when it started, and whose words it originally was.

  2. 02

    Test it

Against evidence rather than affirmations. Self-worth built on slogans collapses under pressure.

  3. 03

    Change the behaviour

Stop over-apologising, over-functioning and pre-emptively declining. Behaviour is what maintains the belief.

  4. 04

    Hold the new floor

Boundaries and asking, practised until they stop feeling like arrogance.

“I stopped auditioning for a place I was already in.”

Common questions

Is low self-esteem the same as depression?+

No, though they travel together. Low self-worth is a belief about your value; depression is a mood state with physical symptoms.

Will this make me arrogant?+

No. People with genuine self-worth are usually easier to be around, not harder — they need less reassurance and take less offence.

How long does it take?+

Longer than a practical problem and shorter than you fear. Most people notice the voice losing authority within six to ten sessions.
