Depression, Confidence & Growth
Depression flattens motivation and then uses the flatness as evidence against you. Low self-worth does the same job more quietly.
This cluster covers low mood, harsh self-criticism, confidence, and the transitions — separation, career, migration, midlife — that unsettle an identity built around something that has changed.
The order of the work matters, and it is the reverse of what depression suggests: action first, feeling second. Small scheduled steps, then the beliefs underneath, then reconnection with structure and people.
You might recognise
- Waking tired no matter how long you sleep
- Losing interest in what used to matter
- Harsh, automatic self-criticism
- Turning down opportunities you would once have taken
- Feeling stuck between a decision you keep circling
How this work goes
Activation before motivation
Two or three small scheduled actions a week, sized for someone running on empty.
The inner critic
Naming the voice, tracing where it was learned, and building a fairer one to answer it.
Clarity, then change
We define the problem accurately before solving it — most stuckness is a definition problem.

Common questions on this topic
I have no energy for therapy. Is it worth starting?+
Yes, and the early sessions are designed for that. They ask very little of you between appointments — the work is sized for someone running on empty.
Do I need medication as well?+
That is a decision for you and your GP or psychiatrist. Counselling works alongside medication and without it, and I will say plainly if a medical review is worth having.
Is low self-esteem the same as depression?+
No, though they travel together. Low self-worth is a belief about your value; depression is a mood state with physical symptoms. The work differs accordingly.
