Hypervigilance, and why you cannot switch it off
Hypervigilance is a threat-detection system left switched on after the threat has passed. It looks like scanning rooms, sitting facing the door, startling at ordinary noise, reading small changes in tone as danger, and exhaustion that sleep does not fix. Paranoia is the wrong word for it, and deciding to stop has never worked for anyone, because the assessment is not being made by the part of you that decides. It settles when the nervous system stops expecting the original threat, which is what trauma treatment does.
What it feels like
Knowing every exit in a room without having tried to. Waking at the smallest sound. Reading a change in someone’s face as the beginning of something bad. Being described as intense or on edge by people who mean it kindly.
The tiredness is the part most people underestimate. Running a continuous threat assessment costs more energy than a job does.
Why it persists
The system learned, correctly, that danger came without warning, and it has not been given evidence that the situation has changed. Telling yourself you are safe now does not update it, because the part making the assessment does not deal in arguments.
Avoidance keeps it going. Every situation swerved is registered as a near miss, which confirms the danger was real.
What settles it
Two things in sequence. First, enough regulation skill to stay in the room: breath, grounding, and knowing what the early build feels like. Then the actual trauma work, which resolves the event the system is still responding to.
TRTP is a structured four-session process designed for exactly this, and it does not require you to retell the event in detail.
Questions
Is hypervigilance the same as anxiety?+
They overlap but they are not the same. Anxiety is largely about what might happen. Hypervigilance is a body-level scan for what is happening now, and it is far more strongly associated with trauma.
Can hypervigilance go away?+
It can reduce. Hypervigilance is a response to a threat the system still believes is present, so resolving what sits underneath is the work that addresses it. How much it reduces, and how quickly, differs from person to person.
Do I have to describe what happened?+
Not in detail. TRTP is designed to resolve trauma without a full retelling, which is one of the reasons people choose it over approaches that require the whole story.
