Love bombing, and how to tell it from real interest

Love bombing is a wave of intense attention early in a relationship — constant contact, extravagant gestures, talk of a future within weeks — used to create dependence quickly. The distinguishing feature is not the intensity but what happens when you set a limit. Genuine enthusiasm accepts a no. Love bombing treats it as a betrayal, and the warmth is withdrawn until you comply.

What it looks like

Contact that fills every gap in the day. Gifts out of proportion to how long you have known each other. Declarations of certainty in the first weeks. Pressure to see each other constantly, framed as devotion.

It feels wonderful, and that is the point. Nobody would fall for something that felt like control at the start.

The test

Set a small limit and watch what happens. Say you are busy on Thursday. Take a day to reply. Keep an arrangement with a friend.

Someone genuinely enthusiastic will be a bit disappointed and fine. Love bombing responds with hurt, accusation or a sudden chill, because the intensity was never really about you.

What usually follows

Devaluation. The same person who could not stop praising you starts finding fault, and the warmth becomes something to be earned back. The alternation between the two is what forms a trauma bond, which is why leaving later feels so much harder than it should.

Recognising the cycle early is far easier than unpicking it two years in.

Questions

Is love bombing always deliberate?+

Not always. Some people do it from anxiety rather than calculation, moving fast because closeness feels urgent. The effect on you can be similar, but someone acting from anxiety will usually be able to hear it and slow down. Someone using it as control will not.

What is the difference between love bombing and a whirlwind romance?+

A whirlwind romance survives a limit. If enthusiasm continues after you say no to something, it was enthusiasm. If it turns cold or punishing, it was leverage.

I think I am being love bombed. What now?+

Slow the pace deliberately and watch the response, keep your own friendships and routines running, and talk to someone outside the relationship. Isolation is what makes the later stages work.
